Because what’s more fun than smashing stuff and finding sweets inside?
Want to add a bit of wow-factor to your child’s party without spending a fortune? A DIY piñata is the perfect addition! It’s creative, customisable, and an absolute hit (literally!) with kids of all ages. Whether you’re planning a princess party, a superhero bash, or a dinosaur-themed day, you can make a piñata to match.
At Non Stop Kids Entertainment, we love giving parents awesome ways to level up their parties - and this one’s a guaranteed crowd-pleaser. So grab the glue, it’s time to get crafty!
Step-by-step guide to making your own piñata
What you'll need:
A balloon (or cardboard structure for shaped piñatas)
Newspaper, torn into strips
PVA glue or flour & water paste
Paint & decorations (tissue paper, stickers, glitter, etc.)
String or ribbon to hang it
Sweets, small toys, or party favours for the inside
A lot of patience (but it’s totally worth it!)
Blow up the balloon
This will be the base of your piñata. Blow it up to your desired size and tie it securely. You can also use a cardboard box if you want a specific shape (like a star, heart, or unicorn!).
Papier-mâché magic
Mix your glue (PVA mixed with a bit of water works, or use a classic flour-and-water paste). Dip your newspaper strips into the glue, remove the excess, and layer them over the balloon until it’s fully covered.
Be sure to criss-cross your strips and leave a small hole at the top for filling it later. Let it dry for 24 hours, then add 1 - 2 more layers for extra strength. You want it tough enough to hold sweets, but not indestructible!
Decorate like a party pro
Once it’s totally dry and hard, it’s time to get creative! Pop the balloon (if used), and start decorating. Use paint, glitter, or cover it in fringed tissue paper for that classic piñata look.
Here are some fun theme ideas to match your party:
🦸♂️ Superhero Shield
🦄 Rainbow Unicorn
🧟♂️ Minecraft Block
🎀 Princess Crown
🐉 Dragon Egg
🍕 Giant Pizza Slice (yes, really!)
Let your child help with the decorating - it’s a fun pre-party activity!
Fill with surprises!
Use the hole at the top to fill your piñata with goodies. Go beyond just sweets! Here are some filling ideas:
🍬 Wrapped sweets & chocolates
🎉 Confetti or party poppers
🧸 Mini toys or bouncing balls
💍 Plastic rings or temporary tattoos
🎫 Little notes or joke cards
Once it’s filled, tape or glue a flap over the hole and attach a sturdy string or ribbon for hanging.
Hang it up & let the smashing begin!
Find a good spot (tree branch, ceiling hook, or strong beam) and get ready for action! Give each child a turn to swing - blindfold optional, but definitely fun! Be sure to supervise and make sure kids take turns at a safe distance.
DIY piñata = Big fun & bigger smiles!
A homemade piñata isn’t just a party game - it’s a centrepiece, a craft activity, and a sweet surprise all rolled into one. It’s the kind of thing that turns a party into a memory your child will never forget.
